Russia has been preparing an attack in the Donbass for days, but it is still the proverbial calm before the storm. US warns to take nuclear threats seriously Given Russia’s military setbacks in Ukraine, the danger posed by Russia’s use of tactical nuclear bombs should not be taken lightly, said CIA chief Bill Burns.
Tactical or battlefield nuclear weapons are nuclear weapons whose action radius and explosive power are significantly smaller than strategic nuclear weapons that can be used outside a continent.
Burns argued this with “possible desperation on the part of Putin and the Russian leadership” as the war is not going as expected. Moreover, Russia can no longer downplay its own terrible losses. The most recent highlight was the sinking of the Black Sea Fleet’s flagship, the Moskva, reportedly by Ukrainian fire. The Kremlin claims that the pride of the Russian Navy has sunk in a storm.
Troops reinforced in the Donbass region
Meanwhile, in eastern Ukraine, everyone is waiting for the new major offensive of the Russian army. The Kremlin has been gathering its troops in the Donbass region for days. According to Ukrainian information, Russian units are currently mainly trying to take the towns of Popasna and Rubischne in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine.
According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, the Russian military has made further progress in capturing the strategically important port city on the Sea of Azov in the heavily disputed city of Mariupol. There was no confirmation from the Ukrainian side, but the situation around Mariupol was described as “critical”. Mariupol can only be saved by a swift military operation to end the Russian blockade or by a political solution.
Moscow threatens new attacks on Kiev
Again there are attempts to rescue civilians from the disputed areas through escape corridors. Nine have been announced for the East. In the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions, routes from Mariupol (photo below), Berdyansk, Tokmak and Enerhodar to Zaporizhia were agreed with Russian troops. So far, these escape corridors have had only limited success.
Moscow threatened again with attacks on the capital Kiev. “The number and scale of missile strikes on targets in Kiev will increase in response to terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage by the nationalist Kiev regime against Russia.” Moscow accuses Kiev of attacking Russian border towns.
