It was dramatic – especially since there were still 90 cows in the barn: while a concert was taking place two and a half kilometers away in Clam Castle, 18 fire brigades were in action in Unterhörnbach (Upper Austria). A four-sided farm was completely on fire, 15 animals died.
The police reports: Friday around 6.45 p.m. the fire broke out for reasons that have not yet been clarified. The 53-year-old farmer, his two sons and a friend had just put bales of straw over the stables. While eating, they saw smoke rising from the attic.
When the first firefighters arrived, the barn was already ablaze. The fire, fueled by strong winds, quickly spread to the entire barn, which housed 100 cows. 30 animals escaped and had to be searched for by firefighters using multiple drones in the area.
house saved
Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighboring house. Bad: 15 cows died in the barn because they could no longer be saved due to the fire and the dangerous situation, said Victor Vogelsang of the Perg district fire command.
Feld also caught fire
The flying sparks had also set fire to an adjacent field, which was immediately extinguished by the emergency services present. Several fire water pipes were needed to get sufficient fire extinguishing water to the scene. Farmers with vacuum drums also came into action.
The crisis intervention team provided five people
The Red Cross crisis intervention team cared for five people on site. The Amstetten fire brigade supported the extinguishing work with the large tank fire truck and a telescopic boom lift. Extensive external and top-down extinguishing has been done to ensure effective firefighting.
Two veterinarians and several hunters and farmers were on site to tend and care for the remaining cows. A fire expert began an investigation on Saturday morning. A total of 18 fire brigades with more than 170 troops were deployed. The investigation into the cause of the fire was carried out by the Upper Austrian criminal investigation department. Because the flames flared up again and again due to the stored straw, subsequent extinguishing work was extremely difficult.
At the same time there was a concert with 5000 visitors
At the same time, FF Klam had to work through a fire watch at the Clam concert with over 5,000 attendees. Due to the extinguishing work at the entrances and exits of the concert grounds, there was a short time outage.
