Human trafficking – South Africa: 26 naked migrants freed from home

Date:

Suspecting that the burglary had occurred due to a broken window, police officers investigated a suburb of the South African metropolis of Johannesburg and made an explosive discovery. 26 naked migrants were held in the affected building.

According to the executive, they were Ethiopian nationals who were held without clothing and without documents by smugglers at the house in Sandringham, north of Johannesburg. According to a police officer, the men only received clothing from the traffickers when they were taken from the home.

30 Ethiopians still on the run?
It is believed that up to 30 other men had already escaped through the broken window. They could still be hiding nearby. According to the information, residents called the police on Thursday evening because they suspected a burglary due to the broken window. The officers then found fifteen naked men in the house. Eleven other men were taken to hospital with injuries apparently sustained during their attempted escape. Three other Ethiopians were arrested. The police accuse them of human trafficking and illegal possession of weapons.

How long those who were now released or arrested lived in captivity is unknown. When and why they were released and where they were taken are also still under investigation. These are sometimes difficult because most men do not speak English.

More than 80 Ethiopians were released in August
In August, police found more than 80 undocumented Ethiopians in a house in Sandringham, being held without adequate food and sanitary facilities. As the most developed economy in Africa, South Africa attracts millions of migrants, many of whom enter illegally.
