The incident happened in the Penkenhütte, an independent accommodation of the Alpine Club at an altitude of over 1800 meters.
No one can be reached from the Penkenbahn
“Unfortunately, there was no one to reach from the Penkenbahn, so we had to drive the car as far up the mountain as the conditions allowed,” says the operations manager. After about 1600 meters it was over, the ambulance with the emergency doctor, who had also been alerted, only reached the settlement of Astegg after about 1200 meters.
Mountain rescuers happen to be nearby
Fortunately mountain rescuer Michael Mitterer, the innkeeper of the Gschößwandhütte (1762 m), happened to be on the mountain that night. “Independently of us, he drove to the injured child in the Skidoo and described the situation to me on the spot. To waste no time, he brought the three-year-old and his mother to us with the Skidoo. We then transported the two to the emergency room with the emergency vehicle,” says Florian Eder.
The rescue eventually took the child to the clinic in Innsbruck.
