An oil tanker exploded on the Mae Klong River in central Thailand (video above). At least one longshoreman was killed and four others injured, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported Tuesday, citing authorities.
According to the newspaper, seven people are still missing. The accident happened in the morning (local time) during maintenance work while the ship was docked in Samut Songkhram province, southwest of Bangkok, the local fire service reported on Twitter. The force of the explosion was so great that the dead man’s leg was found about 500 meters from his body.
The tanker had loaded fuel oil and diesel
There the Mae Klong flows into the Gulf of Thailand. Photos and videos on the internet showed thick columns of smoke rising from the tanker. According to provincial governor Somnuk Promkaev, the “Smooth Sea 22” had loaded 25,000 liters of fuel oil and 20,000 liters of diesel fuel. At first it was said that the tanks were empty.
