The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber (CSU), has called for negotiations between the EU and Tunisia on a second refugee pact in view of the further increase in the number of refugees. At the start of the week, the EPP is asking for a debate in the European Parliament.
“The EU is sleepwalking into a new migration crisis, although the rapidly increasing migratory pressure is evident. More than 300 percent more migrants arrived in Italy in the first three months of this year than last year,” Weber told the German newspaper “Bild,” stressing that Italy should not be left alone. “Italy has already declared a state of emergency – and the other EU countries are looking the other way,” said the EPP boss.
Last year’s figures can already be achieved in the summer
The background to the debate is a report from the EU border control agency Frontex to the European Commission. The increase in the number of refugees could therefore lead to the number of migrants from last year (330,000) being reached this summer. It also shows that Tunisia has now replaced Libya as the main transfer country, as 57 percent of migrants arriving in Italy boarded the smugglers there.
Pact possible with Türkiye
European politician Weber therefore wants the EU to negotiate a migration pact with Tunisia. As with the agreement with Turkey, the gangs of people smugglers must be stopped together, Weber said in an interview with “Bild”. According to Weber, border surveillance and controls and the rejection of illegal migrants should finally work.
