Since the end of December, nearly 200 dead dolphins and porpoises have been stranded on the French Atlantic coast. As of Dec. 23, 190 marine mammals — mostly dolphins and some porpoises — have been found off the coasts of southern Brittany, the Pelagis Observatory said.
Most of the carcasses showed traces of fishing nets. Dolphins often end up in fishing nets as bycatch and then die because they can no longer rise to the surface of the water to breathe.
About 5000 dead dolphins every year
Pelagis estimates that 5,000 dolphins die each year as bycatch off the French coast. Many marine mammals wash ashore every winter, but usually only in February or March. The reason for the earlier time could be stronger westerly winds, it said.
