Cold and snow – After the false spring, winter returns


Much too warm for the time of year, snow is scarce: since Christmas, spring in Austria has prevailed over winter – but according to the forecast, that should be over for the next week for the time being. Because winter finds its way back to the country and brings cold and snow with it.

In concrete terms, the unusual heat for winter has gripped the country since December 20. According to the storm center, it has been too warm on average every day since then. “In some cases, temperature records were literally shattered, especially around the turn of the year,” says weather expert Konstantin Brandes. The first half of January was therefore about six degrees too mild, he explains, looking at the average climate from 1991 to 2020.

But that’s over now, because winter is coming again. Very low temperatures are expected in the coming week, especially in the morning. We can also expect a mix of weather again: the sun can fight through the cloud cover locally, but rain, hail and snowfall will again be a problem in the coming days.

The temperatures in the morning vary from minus six to plus three degrees, the maximum daytime temperatures from zero to nine degrees, it is warmest in the east.
