Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) wants to prevent fracking. She goes to the Council of Ministers with an accompanying lecture leaked to the “Krone”. In fracking, cracks are created in deep rock layers under high pressure and the gas contained therein is extracted.
The subject is mainly discussed in Lower Austria, where the elections will take place on 29 January. The industry is flirting with fracking gas in the Weinviertel and is applying pressure accordingly. ÖVP state politicians have so far been quite skeptical, and OMV has so far rejected this suggestion as well. Only the FPÖ is insulted for this. Minister Gewessler prefers to use renewable forms of energy.
“Fracking is not a worthwhile option from an energy, economic, environmental or climate policy point of view in Austria,” said the Council of Ministers’ speech. It remains to be seen whether the ÖVP will go along with this.
