Hand grenade exploded? – Russia: dead after explosion in ammunition depot

Three soldiers were killed and 16 others injured in a barracks in the western Russian region of Belgorod as a result of a massive explosion. Eight other men have been reported missing since the incident, which took place in the region bordering Ukraine on Saturday, according to Russian media. According to the information, a non-commissioned officer accidentally detonated a hand grenade, after which a fire broke out in the building.

He himself suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, the Russian state news agency Interfax reported on Sunday based on emergency services.

In turn, the Internet portal Baza reported that the man wielded the grenade at a cultural center converted into a military headquarters near the town of Korocha to gain authority in front of military personnel under his command.

The dead and wounded are said to be mobilized recruits. Other portals also wrote that the fire also caught a weapons store and caused the ammunition to explode there. The various statements could not initially be independently verified. The Belgorod region borders northeastern Ukraine and is home to several Russian military bases and training grounds.
