After the plane crash in Nepal in which dozens were killed, the search for the last occupants continues. So far, the bodies of 66 of the 72 people on board have been found and taken to a hospital for identification, the coordinator of the rescue work said on Monday to the German news agency. The bodies would then be handed over to the next of kin.
The stricken Nepalese Yeti Airlines had confirmed the deaths of 69 people on Sunday evening. The dispatcher explained the difference by saying that teams searched for bodies at various locations around the wreckage in and around a 300m deep canyon in the city of Pokhara, and some were double counted.
The investigation into the cause of the crash continued. The black box has not yet been found, the coordinator said.
The flight would have taken only half an hour
The plane crashed Sunday morning on the approximately half-hour flight between the capital Kathmandu and the second-largest city Pokhara on approach to land, the Nepalese aviation authority said.
One of the worst accidents in years
Pokhara is the starting point for numerous treks in the Himalayas, including to the Annapurna massif, a popular hiking area. It is one of the worst aviation accidents in the poor country in years.
Plane crashes are common in Nepal. This is partly due to the fact that many of the world’s highest mountains are located there, including Mount Everest, and the weather conditions can change quickly.
Fflight ban for Nepalese airlines
From the point of view of the EU, safety oversight by the Nepalese aviation authorities is also insufficient. For safety reasons, Nepalese airlines are therefore not allowed to fly in EU airspace. The airline Yeti Airlines, for which the accident machine was used, is on an EU blacklist due to safety concerns.
