While NATO’s Military Committee is sounding the alarm about dwindling supplies of weapons and ammunition and pushing for increased production in allied states, the US has now discovered an additional source of arms supplies to Ukraine: Iran!
Washington plans to deliver confiscated Iranian small arms and ammunition, according to a senior administration official. An announcement could come as soon as this week, the US official, who asked not to be named, said on Wednesday. For years, U.S. Marines have seized weapons believed to come from Iran and intended for Iranian-backed fighters in Yemen.
They are usually transported on fishing boats. The weapons will likely be small arms, such as rifles, which are unlikely to make much difference in the fight against Russia. Long-range weapons and air defense systems are currently at the top of Ukraine’s wish list.
Media report: No Taurus missiles from Germany
According to a media report, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not currently want to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine. The newspaper “Bild” (Thursday edition) reported this in advance, citing German and Ukrainian government circles. At the same time, according to information from the newspaper, talks are underway between Berlin and Kiev about strengthening air defenses and a possible further delivery of Patriot anti-missiles from Germany. Several ministers had previously raised hopes in Ukraine with statements about a quick decision on the Taurus issue.
