In an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, lawyers are calling for an end to the solitary confinement of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. In the letter, they also advocate having him seen by independent doctors.
“Continued confinement in solitary confinement during such a miraculous period of time is torture, resulting in serious damage to his health and a direct threat to his life,” the letter reads. It is also pointed out that Navalny is not there for rehabilitation – it is pure intimidation.
Navalny’s supporters are convinced that the reasons why the 46-year-old is repeatedly placed in solitary confinement are only used to break his will.
Hundreds of doctors had previously called for an end to the malice against the Russian opposition. In addition, according to them, he should be examined by independent doctors because he suffers from fever and cough. The politician was then given antibiotics.
Navalny faces up to 30 years in prison
Opposition politician Alexei Navalny was arrested in January 2021. He had previously flown back to Russia from Germany, where he had recovered from a poison attack. Navalny was later sentenced to nine years in prison for fraud. He denies the allegations. In October last year, he announced that new charges would be brought against him, which could carry a prison sentence of up to 30 years. The opposition politician said through his social networks in December: “You lock someone up in an isolated punishment cell where they can stand or sit on an iron stool for 16 hours a day. Within a month under these conditions, even a healthy person will have back pain. ”
