Sebastian K. (26) was swept away by an avalanche and died while driving variants in the Salzburg Lungau. The young athlete from Mariapfarr was just training to become a mountain and cave rescuer.
“The avalanche doesn’t care if you’re a beginner or an expert,” Hannes Kocher explains pensively. The chief of the mountain rescue of the Lungau district has just lost a young comrade. Sebastian K. ended up under an avalanche on Aineck on Sunday. The accident means the tragic death of a young man – and a mountain rescuer.
The 26-year-old from Mariapfarr has been missing since Sunday. Mountain rescuers from Lungau found his lifeless body under an avalanche on Monday evening. K. had skied alone in a ditch on the north side, a well-known off-piste descent. A piece of snow buried the young man beneath it. The sad detail: he had left his avalanche equipment, avalanche beacon and airbag backpack in the car.
Mourning colleague and friend
“He was a good alpinist and was in the middle of mountain rescue training,” Kocher explains. Sebastian K. was active in cave rescue and an aspiring ice climber. The mountain rescue team, his Lungau comrades, who had to search for him all day Monday, mourn their colleague and friend.
Tourers and off-piste skiers should never be out on their own and should be particularly careful in the current mountain conditions. In addition to snowdrift, there is an old snow problem. “This soft layer in the snow cover is treacherous with fresh snow,” says Michael Butschek of the avalanche warning service. A danger that will probably accompany athletes all winter.
