Banal reason – victims (61) beaten in the U3 car ready for hospital

Date:

An attack on a Vienna subway has left a 61-year-old man in hospital with serious injuries. The victim had been attacked with fists and feet in broad daylight by an unknown person in a U3 carriage. Police have released photos of the suspect and are asking for information.

The reason for the momentous attack could not be more banal: “The 61-year-old asked the man to clear some space so that he could sit next to him,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass. Whoever sat there with his legs apart went completely crazy, punched and kicked the 61-year-old.

A witness eventually intervened and the attacker fled. The victim suffered serious head and upper body injuries and had to be transported to hospital by a professional ambulance.

The attack took place at around 12:50 on 4 January in a U3 car between Stephansplatz and Herrengasse in the direction of Ottakring. Photos of the suspect have been secured. Police are asking the public for help.

Pertinent information is requested, also anonymously, from the city command police on telephone number 01/31310-9921810.
