Austria still hesitating – US already starts vaccination against monkey pox

Date:

While Austria is still busy translating the corresponding quarantine rules into a legal regulation, the United States is already starting to vaccinate against the virus. Britain had previously placed a major order for the smallpox vaccine – it remains to be seen whether a similar move will follow in this country.

The CDC announced Monday that more than 1,000 doses of the drug Jynneos were in stock. This number is likely to increase significantly in the coming weeks. According to a CDC official, the vaccine will be given to people who have had close contact with those confirmed to be infected, as well as to health professionals or people who are particularly vulnerable.

Only one confirmed case so far
There are also over 100 million doses of an older smallpox vaccine called ACAM2000. However, this has significant side effects. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Jynneos is manufactured by Bavarian Nordic. In the United States, there was initially one confirmed case of monkeypox and four suspected cases.

Numbers in Great Britain double again
The outbreak of the disease in Great Britain in particular appears to be explosive at the moment. The number of confirmed cases has doubled again in a short time to 56 cases, the British health authority UKHSTA announced on Monday. By the weekend, about two dozen cases had been reported.

It was only announced last week that the UK had also placed an order for a vaccine – but it was unclear how much vaccine had been purchased and who should be vaccinated with it.

Do you also need a vaccination in Austria?
In Austria, however, preparations for possible further infections are in full swing. According to the Ministry of Health, the notification requirement for monkey pox must also be introduced by Tuesday morning.

There is close coordination with the health authorities of the WHO and the ECDC, and we are working on specifications that are as uniform as possible at European level. In consultation with the European authorities, it is also being examined whether and which vaccine may be suitable for use in Austria.
