Algeria has suspended the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty with Spain because of its changed position on the conflict in Western Sahara. However, Pedro Sánchez’s board assures that it will continue to maintain relations with Algeria.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albaresregretted Algeria’s announcement of suspend the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborhood and Cooperation with Spain and has stated that he does not fear “repercussions” because the Algerian government has proven to be a “reliable partner”.
Speaking to the press before participating in an economic forum in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), attended by King Felipe VI, Albares also expressed his willingness to appear in the Congress of Deputies for this matter, after the requests of CS and PP.
Algeria today announced the suspension of the treaty due to the “unjustified” position of the Spanish government on Western Saharathe same day that the head of the executive, Pedro Sánchez, defended his turn in Congress in the Spanish position in this territory.
In a statement, the Spanish government deplores Algeria’s decision to suspend the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty with Spain, but reaffirms its “full commitment” to its content, in particular with regard to respect for the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.
In addition, the executive notes that it continues to consider Algeria “a neighboring and friendly country”while reiterating “his full availability to continue to maintain and develop the special cooperative relations between the two countries, for the benefit of both peoples.”
