Speech on the Occasion of the 80th Anniversary – Putin Commemorates the Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazis

Date:

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad by the Red Army, Russian President Vladimir Putin laid flowers at the Border Stone memorial in St Petersburg on Wednesday. Putin’s hometown had been under siege by the Nazis for two and a half years. More than a million people died of starvation.

Those who fell during the so-called “Leningrad blockade” were remembered. The Russian president also laid a wreath at the memorial cemetery for the victims of the siege. It was January 18, 1943 when Saint Petersburg was liberated. The Nazi siege of the city lasted nearly two and a half years. More than a million Leningrad residents died at the time as a result of Hitler’s “starvation policy”.

Putin could declare a second wave of mobilization
According to Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin will deliver a speech on January 18 to mark the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad. This is reported by the Ukrainian news portal The Kyiv Independent. According to the Institute for War Research (ISW), he could take this opportunity to announce a second wave of mobilization.

“Putin likes to use symbolic dates to address the Russian people, and some pro-Russian pro-war bloggers suspect he will use this opportunity to declare mobilization or war with Ukraine,” the ISW writes. Ukrainian military intelligence previously reported that Russia is planning a new wave of mobilization of 500,000 conscripts for the war against Ukraine.
