A demonstration will take place in Baiona from 10.30 am against the measure that will increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. It is expected that a third of the schools will close and that train and metro traffic will be greatly affected.
Iparralde and France face the first day of this Thursday strikes and demonstrations, which could paralyze part of the country, to protest President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform plan that will raise the minimum retirement age to 64. The main protest in Iparralde takes place at 10:30 a.m. in Baiona where a demonstration will start from near the Employment Office.
According to the convening unions — which include LAB and ELB — transportation will be one of the hardest hit industries in the entire state. Likewise, public services such as schools will be affected as well as key infrastructure such as refineries. Many health workers are also expected to support the strike.
The unions aim is for this Thursday to be the start of major mobilizations forcing the executive to back down, just as they achieved in 1995 when a pension reform project involving conservative President Jacques Chirac was withdrawn due to intense pressure from the street. despite the government’s absolute majority in parliament.
The French government, in turn, has insisted that trade union mobilization does not become a “blockade of the country”. A total of 10,000 police officers, 3,500 of which will be stationed in Paris, will ensure that the day passes without incident, the interior ministry said.
The government proposal aims to raise the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030 and to bring forward the increase from 42 to 43 contribution years to 2027 in order to allow for full retirement (so far planned for 2035).
The Executive ensures that the reform is necessary, otherwise there will be a deficit in the pension system that could rise to 12,500 million euros in 2030.
