According to its own statements, the Israeli secret service has arrested several people in recent days who had spied in Israel on behalf of Iran or had planned sabotage and assassination attempts.
Among other things, the murder of a scientist was planned. Israel’s domestic secret service Shin Bet said on Wednesday that a resident of a Tel Aviv suburb had fallen into the net of security forces. The man is said to have agreed to kill the scientist for 100,000 dollars (about 91,700 euros) in contact with an Iranian spy network.
The suspect had already purchased a gun and ammunition, Shin Bet said. The Iranian contacts promised to help him escape to Russia immediately after the crime. Before the planned attack, the recruited Israeli had to prove his “seriousness and operational capabilities” with other acts of sabotage, it was said. It is another case in a series of Iranian attempts to recruit Israeli citizens for espionage purposes.
Contact via social media
The Iranian agents apparently contacted their Israeli targets through fake social media profiles. Iran has in the past blamed Israel for the killings of Iranian nuclear scientists. It is unclear whether the assassination plans could have been retaliatory.
