The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Labour jacinda ardernunexpectedly announced this Thursday that will leave his position in February, as he does not have “the energy” to run for re-election in October.
Ardern, 42, made the announcement at a Labor Party rally in the eastern city of Napier, to which he said tremblingly: “I don’t have enough energy to continue with the work. It’s the moment“.
The charismatic politician succeeded in October 2020 in extending her mandate by a overwhelming majority and for the Labor Party to rule alone, something no New Zealand formation had achieved since the 1996 electoral reform.
“I’m not quitting because it’s hard, I’m quitting because this job comes with a lot of responsibility I don’t have enough energy to do it justice,” explained Ardern at a press conference, saying it will always be the “greatest” job of his life.
“I believe that leading a country is the greatest privilege one can have, but also one of the most demanding jobs,” he stressed. “You can’t and shouldn’t do it unless you have a full tank and something else up your sleeve to deal with unexpected challenges,” he added.
