Criticism of Scholz – Ukraine on tank deliveries: “We don’t have time”

Date:

The pressure from Ukraine for faster tank deliveries is increasing. Time is running out, the Ukrainian presidential office said on Thursday. Volodymyr Zelensky himself also criticized the conditions for tank deliveries – and blamed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In Russia, meanwhile, there are fears of a nuclear war again.

“We don’t have time, the world doesn’t have that time either,” the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Andriy Yermak, wrote to the Telegram news service, adding: “The question of tanks for Ukraine needs to be clarified if this also applies for additional anti-aircraft systems, which are urgently needed against the Russian attacks Any further hesitation would simply cost lives, according to the 51-year-old’s dramatic appeal.

Zelenskyj: “Not a very correct strategy”
President Zelensky took a similar stance, indirectly criticizing Germany for its stance on main battle tank supplies. Sometimes you shouldn’t weigh and compare yourself. “For example, if you say: I will give tanks if someone else also gives tanks. I am powerful in Europe, I will help if someone from outside Europe also helps,” Zelensky said at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday. “It seems to me that this is not a very correct strategy,” said Zelenskyj, who was involved in a debate. The Ukrainian did not mention the name of the German Chancellor.

Germany hesitates, waiting for the US
According to media reports, Scholz is willing to allow the delivery of Leopard main battle tanks to Ukraine, but only if the US makes its Abrams main battle tanks available. US President Joe Biden has apparently not yet committed to this in a telephone conversation with Scholz on Tuesday, but according to media reports there are likely to be substantial arms shipments from the United States.

In the debate on arms supplies since the beginning of the war, Scholz has always emphasized that Germany is not doing it alone, but is cooperating with partners such as France and the US. In recent days, however, the pressure on Scholz to make a decision has increased significantly. This Friday, the West will discuss further deliveries at a meeting at the US base in Ramstein.

Wagner boss: ‘Can learn a lot from Ukrainians’
Meanwhile, on the Ukrainian front, things are still not going quite as Russia had hoped. Contrary to the estimates of the mercenary company Wagner in recent weeks, the capture of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which has been fought over for months, is likely to drag on.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin reported the capture of a key suburb on Thursday, but warned against assuming Ukrainian soldiers could be driven out of Bakhmut any time soon. “Contrary to various opinions, according to which the armed forces of Ukraine are fleeing from Artemovsk (Russian name for Bakhmut), this is not the case. The Ukrainian army works in a clear and coordinated manner. We can learn a lot from them.”

Medvedev: “Defeat could trigger nuclear war”
Official Russia, meanwhile, continues to maintain the threat of a nuclear power. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev again warned of nuclear war. He explained via the Telegram courier service that “a defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war could spark a nuclear war”.

Referring to the war in Ukraine, he added: “Nuclear powers have never lost major conflicts on which their fate depends.” Medvedev is considered a close confidant of President Vladimir Putin and is deputy chairman of the National Security Council.
