Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is sure that Russia would march on if Ukraine were defeated. “If Putin wins this war, he will do the same elsewhere,” the 45-year-old said in an interview with the German news magazine “Spiegel” and the French newspaper “Le Figaro”.
When asked about the concerns of many state leaders that further arms shipments would continue the spiral of escalation, Zelenskyy replies: “The Russians are primarily responsible for the escalation. They tortured, killed and buried people alive.”
Europe must be clear that aid is not for Ukrainians, but for Europeans.
Using the example of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Selenskyj outlines how difficult it is to get international aid. He always had to “force the SPD politician to help Ukraine and constantly convince him”.
“You will have to sacrifice the lives of your people”
He is said to have previously said to Scholz, “Olaf, listen, we’re missing missiles. I know you don’t have your own anymore, we also have an intelligence agency. I know you’re giving us everything you’ve got.” But according to Zelenskyy, giving ‘everything’ to Ukraine is simply cheaper, warning in an interview: “Once the Russians are at your border, you will have to sacrifice the lives of your people.”
Ukraine has been under a lot of pressure lately in the eastern city of Bakhmut in the Donbass region. Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service reports daily triple-digit Ukrainian losses. When asked why he is not withdrawing troops there, although military experts agree that the city is of little strategic importance, Zelenskyi replies to reporters: “What happens after Bakhmut?”
Putin’s power is based on “victories and conquests”. Therefore, only a united West can stop Russia. Because for Selenskyj one thing is certain: Putin “is a dragon that needs to eat”. Satisfying his appetite, on the other hand, is hardly possible.
