Contrary to the vote at the EU summit in Brussels, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev spoke out against further military aid from his country to Ukraine. “I hope the government shows common sense and that this is no longer allowed in the future,” said Radew
At the end of 2022, the former Eastern Bloc country launched a military aid package for Kiev from its armed forces for the first time since the start of the Russian offensive war.
“I hear less and less calls for peace, and only for victory, with no one anywhere defining what victory means,” the former fighter jet pilot and air force chief said upon his arrival at the EU summit, according to a report by Bulgaria’s state television BNT.
“Measures to End the Conflict”
Bulgaria will continue to help Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, but it is time for “measures to end the conflict” to be formulated, Radev said. He wants to work with the EU to ensure that we “can lead the debate towards an end to military action”.
“If necessary, we will veto”
The Bulgarian president also threatened his country with a veto if a tenth package of EU sanctions against Russia also included sanctions on the nuclear energy industry. “Wherever our interests are in immediate danger (…), we are very vigilant and observant. If necessary, we will veto it,” said Radew.
