A seriously injured woman, a slightly injured man, high material damage, a chase through three districts and a major police operation: the escape of a 33-year-old driver in Vienna on Wednesday afternoon had enormous consequences. The driver had evaded a police check and had driven away from the management – only after two accidents did the fugitive’s vehicle come to a stop.
The driver of the Mariahilfer Gurtel was targeted because of defects in the wheel arch and because the man was not wearing a seat belt while driving. Initially, the suspect cooperated and followed the police patrol, but when the patrol car stopped, the driver accelerated and sped away. The fugitive completely ignored red traffic lights, as well as speed limits – the escape route spanned three districts – the 15th, 12th and 5th districts.

A serious accident then occurred on Margaretengurtel – the suspect drove the car into the intersection at a red light and collided with a taxi. His car was then thrown onto the curb. A pedestrian could not dodge in time, the out of control car hit the woman – the 34-year-old suffered serious injuries. The taxi driver suffered minor injuries in the collision.
The getaway car was badly damaged, but that did not stop the 33-year-old driver from driving away again. The escape finally came to an abrupt end in Gießaufgasse: the car collided with two parked vehicles and came to a stop.
Examination refused by doctor
The suspect was arrested and brought before the public prosecutor, but the 33-year-old refused to be examined. It was suspected that he had used drugs beforehand. He justified his flight from the police with a non-existent driver’s license. The list of charges against the suspect is long and he was released after questioning.
