NATO Eastern Flank – German Patriot systems deployed to Poland

Date:

Germany’s Bundeswehr will begin moving the first two of its three promised Patriot anti-aircraft missile squadrons from Germany to Poland on Monday. The Bundeswehr announced on Friday that their goal was to help protect Polish airspace and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank.

Laying begins in Gnoien in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The anti-aircraft systems will be moved to operational positions near the city of Zamość in southeastern Poland. From there it is about 60 kilometers to the Ukrainian border and 110 kilometers to the Ukrainian city of Lviv (Lemberg).

Bundeswehr present since January
Soldiers of the Bundeswehr have been on site in Poland since January 16 to ensure that the components of the weapon system are installed together with the Polish alliance partners.

After a missile hit Polish territory in November last year, then German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and her Polish counterpart Mariusz Blaszczak agreed that Germany’s Patriot missile defense systems would be moved to Poland. Meanwhile, Blaszczak caused quite a stir in Berlin because he suggested better stationing the Patriots in Ukraine.

Three fire brigade units are coming to Poland
It is now clear that three fire units will be coming to Poland after all. In addition, Germany will also supply a Patriot anti-aircraft system to Ukraine to help the country defend against Russia.
