Violence against female activists leaves bad apples for London police

Date:

Activists dumped more than a thousand bad apples at the Metropolitan Police headquarters in London on Friday. They wanted to draw attention to the high number of police officers suspected of domestic violence and violence against women and girls. The 1,071 apples correspond to the number of London police employees who the agency says are under investigation for alleged crimes.

“We’ve been told time and time again that it’s just a bad apple here and there, but in reality it’s a fundamental problem with the police department,” said Ruth Davison, president of the organization Refuge, which helps victims of domestic violence. “This must be denounced now, because women’s lives are in danger.”

The Metropolitan Police said this week it is re-examining 1,071 employees who reported suspected domestic or sexual assault in the past decade.

Earlier this week, London police officer David Carrick, who was part of a unit protecting MPs and diplomats, was dismissed from the police force. He had admitted in court to 24 counts of rape and numerous other assaults against 12 women.

London woman kidnapped, raped and murdered
The police in London have long been under enormous criticism following a series of scandals. The kidnapping, rape and murder of Londoner Sarah Everard by a police officer in March 2021 sparked outrage. Wayne Couzens, who has since been discharged and also served in a unit protecting MPs and diplomats, was sentenced to life in prison.
