Heavy snowfall has led to widespread power outages and traffic accidents in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. In the Czech municipality of Hertvikovice, a motorist was killed on Saturday by a tree that fell on a moving car. In the Polish village of Wawrzka, southeast of Krakow, a 70-year-old woman in need of care died after the power went out and her oxygen device failed.
Relatives had alerted the rescue service and the fire brigade, but the fire truck, which was supposed to bring her an oxygen bottle as a replacement, crashed on the way in the snow flurry, the PAP news agency reported on Saturday.
More than 100,000 households without electricity
CTK also reported a fatal traffic accident related to the weather in Prague. According to PAP reports, more than 100,000 households in Poland were temporarily without electricity.
In most cases, trees that fell on power lines were the cause. In Slovakia, too, the power supply to thousands of households was cut off due to the weather and the police reported numerous weather-related traffic accidents.
