Chris Hipkins will become the new leader of the Labor Party in power in New Zealand on Sunday and thus also the country’s new prime minister. The former minister for combating the corona pandemic was nominated on Saturday as the only candidate to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
His confirmation at the party leadership meeting on Sunday is considered a formality. Ardern surprisingly announced her resignation on Thursday.
“Energetic and enthusiastic”
The prospect of his new position makes him “energetic and enthusiastic”. Hipkins, 44, said in an initial reaction to his nomination that he considers himself “quite decisive” and “can get things done”.
He was also optimistic about the parliamentary elections in October. However, the Labor Party is not in the lead in polls given the rising cost of living, poverty and high crime rates.
