Lula fires the head of the army in full purge after the coup attempt

Date:

The left-wing president’s decision coincided with the Supreme Court’s decision to release 464 people arrested for the January 8 attacks.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this Saturday fired the commander of the army, General Júlio César de Arruda, in the midst of the purge he had begun over his lack of confidence in military institutions following the coup attempt ‘état. last January 8. Two weeks after the attack by radical Bolsonaristas on the offices of the presidency, congress and supreme court in Brasilia, the president informed Arruda of his resignation, Arruda, who will step down from office before completing his first month in office.

According to the newspaper ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’, Lula made the decision because Arruda “showed no willingness” to take “immediate” measures to dispel his doubts about the actions of some military sectors in the coup attempt. The hitherto head of the army had temporarily taken up the position on December 30, two days before the end of far-right Jair Bolsonaro’s government, and was confirmed by Lula in the first week of January. According to GloboNews, he will be replaced by the military commander of the Southeast, Tomás Ribeiro Paiva.

Arruda’s resignation was learned hours after Brazil’s Supreme Court decided to keep 942 people in prison for participating in the attack on the headquarters of the three state powers. Judiciary Judge Alexandre de Moraes passed the resolution after completing the analysis of the situation of the 1,406 people still detained. Of these, 464 have been granted provisional release, although they must observe certain precautions, the newspaper ‘O Globo’ reports.

Of the 942 people who have not been released, their flagrant detention has been converted to preventive detention, for which there is no specific term of release. According to information released by Moraes’ office, the people who will continue to be arrested weigh crimes related to “acts of terrorism”, “destruction of public property”, “criminal association, violent abolition of democratic rule of law and coup ‘état’. They have also been charged with “threat, persecution and incitement to crime”.

On the other hand, with regard to the released prisoners, there would be no indication that they committed acts of violence, invasion of property or looting of them. However, they must comply with a series of measures, such as house arrest at night and on weekends, the use of electronic ankle bracelets and the suspension of all possession of weapons. They will also not be able to leave the country, nor use social networks to communicate with the other suspects, among other things, the newspaper said.

Another 684 people were released for “humanitarian reasons”, according to the Federal Police, because they were elderly, sick or women with children, but their names were also included in the investigations.
