A suicide bomber rammed a car loaded with explosives into the gate of a government building in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Sunday. Gunmen then stormed the seat of the regional government.
The building houses, among other things, the office of the mayor of Mogadishu and the governor of the surrounding Benadir region, said DPA police officer Mohamed Dahir. According to Dahir, the suspected terrorists were shooting around. Initially, no further information was known about the attack.
Government acts against terrorist militias
The crisis state in the Horn of Africa with some 16 million inhabitants has been shaken for years by terrorist attacks and other violence, especially by the Islamist terrorist militia al-Shabab.
The government has been conducting a military offensive against al-Shabab for several months now. The government succeeded in retaking large parts of central Somalia. At the same time, the extremists are increasing the frequency of their attacks.
