At least 10 people, including a child, have been killed when a multi-storey building collapses in the Syrian city of Aleppo. Sunday’s collapse was caused by water damage to the foundation of the five-story home, state news agency Sana reported, citing a police source.
The salvage work was still in full swing on Sunday. Rescuers suspected that there were missing people under the rubble. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the ten fatalities are refugees from the Afrin region in northeastern Syria. In the Sheikh Maksud district where the accident happened, mainly Syrian Kurds live. Many of them had fled to Aleppo after the start of a Turkish military offensive in northern Syria in 2018.
Ten dead in house collapse in September
The observatory is based in the UK and relies on a network of whistleblowers in Syria for its information. Many refugees in Syria find shelter in dilapidated houses. Building collapses are not uncommon. Ten people, including three children, died in a collapsing house in Aleppo last September.
