Background unclear – Three journalists arrested in Iran

Date:

More female journalists have been arrested in Iran. As the newspaper “Etemad” reported on Sunday, journalists Melika Hashemi, Saidi Shafii and Mehrnush Sarei were taken to the notorious Ewin Prison in the capital Tehran. There were no further details about the arrests.

More than 90 media workers have been arrested during the recent wave of protests across the country, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) in New York. About half of those arrested have since been released on bail. Reporting capabilities in the country are extremely limited. Iran is one of the last places in a press freedom ranking by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Protest by ignoring mandatory headscarves
The reason for the protests against the repressive course of the government and the Islamic regime was the death of the Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in September. She died in police custody after being arrested for violating Islamic dress codes. Street protests have subsided in recent weeks. Many women now express their displeasure through civil disobedience, for example by ignoring the mandatory headscarf.
