The two tunnel occupants in Lützerath, Germany, do not expect any criminal consequences. The RWE group has not filed a complaint against the men, who called themselves ‘Pinky’ and ‘Brain’. At the time the village was evacuated, a total of 531 activists were on site.
The Aachen police presented the final balance of the operation in Lützerath on Wednesday. 372 people had left the village “peacefully and voluntarily” and an additional 159 people had to be identified. There is still no public information on the cost of the police operation. The right-wing populist AfD has launched a small inquiry in Düsseldorf’s state parliament, and the state government has four weeks to reply.
The police do not know the identity
As reported, the energy company RWE wants to extract lignite in Lützerath, which is rejected in the energy policy because of the climate damage. Climate activists, such as Greta Thunberg from Sweden, the German Luisa Neubauer and the last generation from Austria, had hidden in the village. Two men calling themselves “Pinky” and “Brain” hid in a tunnel for days. As the Aachen police announced, the RWE group has not filed a complaint against the two activists. The police therefore do not know the identities of the men.
Referring to an internal police document, the “Spiegel” reported that RWE had promised the activists not to press charges if they came out of the tunnel voluntarily. The tunnel residents then demanded that they be allowed to leave Lützerath masked – without the police taking their fingerprints and personal data. According to the newspaper, she agreed.
Now closed
The tunnel in the lignite mining area is now closed. At the start of the eviction, there were 531 activists in the village.
