Unfortunately, municipal housing in Vienna and mold are not a rare combination. It is especially bad for Kerstin O. from Donaustadt.
The plaster in the bathroom has fallen off the ceiling several times. Kerstin O.’s seven-year-old daughter was lucky enough to avoid falling parts while brushing her teeth. Now the 31-year-old is having another baby – and wants to get out of her 47 square meters on Schüttaustrasse. “I’m afraid something will happen to me or my children,” said the Danube city woman.
Wiener Wohnen: “Use-related fungus”
Wiener Wohnen replied with the standard answer: wrong ventilation. renters fault! “The tenant’s apartment was checked on November 4, 2021 following her report of a mold infestation. The measurements taken showed dry wall construction, but increased surface moisture due to the increased humidity, leading to use-related mould,” said a company spokesperson.
Wiener Wohnen paid for the removal of the mold the first time. “In goodwill”, as it is called. Then the fungus came back. But now the tenant has to remove the mold himself (which he did) or pay the costs.
Kerstin O. denies that she opened the window in the bathroom too little. “I air out the room every time after showering.” Wiener Wohnen rejects a movement as unjustified.
The tenant receives support from the FPÖ. Chairman Dominik Nepp: “It is shameful what ignorance Wiener Wohnen shows towards the request of a pregnant single mother.” The city must respond quickly.
