At least 41 people have been killed in a serious bus accident in the Balochistan province of southwestern Pakistan. According to an official, the bus fell off a bridge in the Lasbela district on Sunday and immediately caught fire.
The bus driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle at high speed while driving from the provincial capital of Quetta to Karachi in southern Sindh province. The bus crashed into a bridge pier and then fell off the bridge, the media said.
The vehicle immediately caught fire. Most of the victims were burned beyond recognition. Four people were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries. In total, the bus is said to have carried 48 passengers at the time of the accident. The death toll is believed to continue to rise.
Third place in the world for the number of road fatalities
Serious road accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan due to poor infrastructure and roadless vehicles. The South Asian country ranks third in the world in terms of road deaths.
The many dilapidated roads in the country, lax controls and often reckless driving behavior are to blame for this. Buses often take considerably more passengers than allowed.
