The Memphis Police Department announced this Saturday the “permanent deactivation” of the Street Crime Operations to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods (SCORPION) unit, whose five officers are implicated in the death of Tire Nichols.
“After listening carefully to Tyer Nichols’ family, community leaders and non-involved officers who did a great job, it is in everyone’s best interest disable the SCORPION unit permanentlythe Memphis Police Department said in an official statement.
The text explains that the agents assigned to this unit accepted the decision. “The hateful acts of a few clouds the name SCORPIO with dishonour. It is imperative that we as the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all those affected.”
Thus, the Department commits to “serve our communityand to “take all possible steps to restore confidence negatively damaged by the death of Mr. Tire Nichols.”
Nichols’ death as a result of his arrest for a traffic violation has sparked a new wave of protests against police brutality in the United States, especially after the spread of video of the moment of the arrest showing the officers involved beating Nichols brutal manner.
