More than 30 people were killed in an attack on a mosque at a police headquarters in Pakistan on Monday. A police spokesman also reported to the German news agency that 147 people were injured, several of whom are said to be in critical condition. Authorities believe it was a suicide attack.
The mosque was overcrowded with at least 260 worshipers at the time of the explosion, the government said. Many of the victims are police officers who have gathered for midday prayers. The mosque is located in a building that also houses the provincial police station and an anti-terrorism department, Peshawar police chief Ijaz Khan said. Part of the building collapsed. An official said more people are believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Taliban have canceled the ceasefire
Initially, no one claimed responsibility for the attack. Late last year, however, the Pakistani Taliban – who operate independently of the Islamist Taliban government in neighboring Afghanistan – declared a ceasefire with the government in Islamabad. They have since claimed responsibility for several attacks.
In Pakistan, the vast majority of the population of over 230 million people is Muslim. About two million people live in the city of Peshawar in the north of the country.
