The two young suspects in the case of a death after a scuffle in Schattendorf (Mattersburg district) in Burgenland in December have been released in exchange for lenient measures.
The spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office announced this to the APA on Monday. The suspicion of intentionally inflicting serious bodily harm remains. The results of the written autopsy are expected in the coming days.
Death from severe head injury
The victim is the father of two children, Jürgen T. from the community. He was out with his friends when the group’s field trip ended in the bar on Sunday night. Just before midnight, a deadly scuffle broke out in front of the restaurant.
Juveniles since then in custody
The 42-year-old was brutally beaten by the two suspects. There was no hope for the father of the family, who suffered a serious head injury and later died in Eisenstadt hospital. Shortly afterwards, an 18-year-old Syrian from the Neunkirchen district and a 16-year-old from the Mattersburg district were arrested. The two boys have been held in Eisenstadt prison ever since.
17 witnesses questioned
The possible course of events was simulated with both suspects behind closed doors. In addition to a coroner and police, 17 witnesses were present on the night of the assault.
The investigations continue
The two young people were released on Monday against less heavy means. They had to promise not to try to interfere with the investigation, to live in a specific location, and to return to work. A probationary period has also been imposed, the spokeswoman said. It will be further investigated, she stressed. Now we await the written report on the cause of death.
