Out of the top 20 cases – country comparison 2022: Austria is so corrupt

Date:

The political scandals of recent years continue to damage Austria’s international image. According to the current Transparency International (TI) corruption index, the situation has deteriorated again – just like last year – and our country has therefore become more corrupt. Compared to 2021, Austria has lost three points in the index and is now only 22nd with 71 points out of 100.

Austria has again lost ground in the Transparency International (CPI) 2022 Corruption Index. According to TI-Austria, it is three points less this time. Our country only gets 71 out of a possible 100 points. Last year it was 74 and two years ago 76 points. The result: Austria has fallen out of the top 20 and is now only 22nd, closely followed by countries such as the Seychelles, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.

“Last year, Austria was still in 13th place, but now we are all being held accountable for the fact that political decision-makers have not or only very hesitantly addressed anti-corruption measures,” warns the CEO of TI-Austria. , Eve Geibler. “The recently published report by GRECO, the anti-corruption group, also criticizes that efforts to curb corruption are still far too weak and need to be significantly stepped up,” she says.

The trend has been downward for years
The trend of the “Corruption Perceptions Index” (abbreviated CPI) is steadily decreasing: in 2019, Austria still had 77 points. In 2021, 74 points were the worst result since 2014. In the previous year, the country lost another three points.

Denmark in first place, Somalia at the bottom
Denmark leads the ranking with 90 points, followed by New Zealand and Finland with 87 points each. Austria also lags behind in the German-speaking area: Switzerland is seventh with 82 points, Germany ninth with 79 points. At the bottom of the list are South Sudan and Syria (13 points each), with Somalia at the bottom with 12 points.
