A young Iranian couple has now been sentenced to a long prison term for releasing a dance video. A video showed the blogger Astijazh Haghighi (21) without a headscarf and dancing with her fiancé Amir Mohammad Ahmadi (22) in front of the Freedom Tower in Tehran. Both are banned in public in Iran.
The organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported on Tuesday that they were arrested in early November. According to media reports, the couple were beaten by plainclothes officers upon their arrest.
10.5 years in prison each
A revolutionary court in Tehran sentenced the two bloggers to 10.5 years each in prison for “inciting depravity” and for intent to disrupt national security and “spread propaganda against the Islamic Republic.” There was no information about when the video was released.
In Iran, young people in particular have been protesting against the authoritarian course of government and regime in the Islamic Republic since mid-September. The trigger was the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody. She had been arrested by the so-called vice police for violating Islamic dress codes.
The headscarf requirement is often ignored
Street protests have subsided in recent weeks. Many women now express their displeasure through civil disobedience, for example by ignoring the mandatory headscarf.
