Defense Minister: – “Ukraine will receive 120 to 140 main battle tanks”

Date:

Ukraine will receive 120 to 140 Western main battle tanks in a first wave, according to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. These would be provided by a coalition of 12 countries, Kuleba said in an online briefing Tuesday.

“I can say that the Ukrainian armed forces will receive between 120 and 140 western tanks in the first wave of contributions,” Kuleba said. The delivery includes German Leopard 2, British Challenger 2 and American M1 Abrams tanks. “The armored coalition now has twelve members,” said the minister. He did not give an exact time when the deliveries would arrive. According to Kuleba, the training time of Ukrainian soldiers must also be taken into account.

No ammunition for anti-aircraft tanks from Brazil
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was turned down in Brazil on Monday night (local time) when he requested delivery of 300,000 rounds of ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft tank used in Ukraine. Germany has delivered 30 cheetahs to Ukraine and promised seven more. However, ammunition is scarce. “Brazil is a land of peace. And that is why Brazil does not want any involvement in this war – not even indirectly,” Brazil’s new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said during a press conference with Scholz in Brasilia to justify the cancellation.

Lula spoke out in favor of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. It is necessary “to form a group of countries that is strong enough and respected and sit down with them at the negotiating table.” Lula mentioned Brazil and China as possible mediators.

“Indispensable Military Aid”
Lithuanian President Nauseda pleaded on Lithuanian television Monday evening for the West to keep all options open for arms supplies in the war in Ukraine. “These red lines must be crossed,” he said, citing reservations about Ukraine’s demand for longer-range fighter jets and missiles. These weapon systems are an “indispensable military aid”. “At this crucial moment in the war, with the tipping point approaching, it is important that we act immediately,” Nauseda said.

Criticism from Russia on arms deliveries
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized the discussion about more and heavier weapons for Ukraine. “We are taking the necessary measures to prevent Ukraine from becoming an even greater threat to our security,” Lavrov said Tuesday during a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Samih Shukri in Moscow.

“Everything is very clear here, it is not about Ukraine at all,” said the minister. He accused the US of using Ukraine to assert world hegemony. “The Kiev regime, which has no independence whatsoever, fulfills the will of the sovereign: the US and all the rest of the West, to which Washington has submitted.” Recently, Russia had repeatedly emphasized that it was at war in Ukraine with the entire Western world on display.
