“Drama about the situation” – CV affair: Santos wants to give up posts

Date:

US Congressman George Santos is reportedly resigning his two commission posts over the resume scandal. The Republican announced this to his fellow party members on Tuesday during a non-public group meeting, the American media report unanimously, citing participants.

“He just felt like there was so much drama about the situation,” Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene told CNN after the rally. Santos initially did not confirm the plans.

“Experienced Investor on Wall Street”
The 34-year-old was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in congressional elections in November. The New York Times newspaper then scrutinized Santos’ resume. For example, he claimed to have been a “seasoned Wall Street investor.” In the end, it turned out that Santos was never employed by the companies mentioned.

The newspaper was also unable to verify his university degree. Santos has also been accused of misleading the public about his family history and alleged Jewish background. In an interview, the Republican admitted that he had “whitewashed” his resume.

The Santos case should have been handled internally
Santos is now also in the crosshairs of the judiciary. The New York State Attorney’s Office began its investigation in December. According to media reports, the Justice Department is also eyeing Santos for his campaign financing. Recently, some Republicans had demanded that Santos relinquish his seat in parliament, but he had previously ruled out doing so. Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy had emphasized that he wanted to settle the Santos case internally.

Republican majority could melt
Santos’ resignation would be difficult for Republicans in the House of Representatives. In the congressional elections, they regained a majority in the congressional chamber – but only by a hair’s breadth. Should Santos step down, new elections would have to be held in his constituency. It was inevitable that the Democrats would win the seat and the Republican majority would melt away.
