Weather experts expect heavy snowstorms across Austria by the weekend – including fresh snow up to 50 centimeters high. As in recent days, there may be delays on roads and railways and power outages.
“In the coming days, moist air will flow into Austria from the northwest, accumulating on the northern side of the Alps and sometimes causing heavy snowfall here,” Christian Pehsl of Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG) explained in a broadcast.
snow and rain
“Especially in the area from Vorarlberg through North Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria to the Mostviertel and Upper Styria, 20 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow can be expected on Friday, especially at higher altitudes, sometimes around 100 centimeters. Below 1,000 meters above sea level, the snowfall can turn into rain, especially on Friday, and the amount of snow is less,” reports Pehsl.
Next week will be sunnier
According to Geosphere Austria, the weather situation, with sometimes strong to stormy winds, will most likely continue until the beginning of next week. Heavy snowfall also falls from the northwest to the northern side of the Alps from Saturday to Tuesday. Further developments are still very uncertain. From today’s perspective, the weather will calm down on Wednesday and sunny and very cold winter weather will dominate in the second half of the week.
