Wien Energie’s new annual requirement is a headache for many Viennese heads. So is Eva P. The 82-year-old is ill, lives alone in a small apartment and receives a visit from the home help. Last year, P. paid 127 euros every two months for district heating. The new recipe provides 660 (!) euros.

Never in debt
“My blood pressure rose to 200 when I read the letter,” she tells the “Krone” with tears in her eyes. Throughout her life, she has always paid all bills on time and never went into debt. And now this.

Her manager immediately contacted the ombudsman service of Wien Energie. “The employees there work very hard. But there was not much they could do’, says Ines S. In the worst case, the pensioner, who receives a pension of just over 1,100 euros, could pay 400 euros for two months. Finally, there are also electricity, rent and groceries.

Partial amounts can be reduced
According to Wien Energie, P. has a very high heat consumption compared to other apartments. The recipe is correct. “We can offer to reduce the partial amounts. But then you really have to reduce consumption,’ says a spokeswoman. According to the pensioner, this has never been increased. The 82-year-old hopes for a solution, because: “The whole thing makes me even sicker.”
