Following the announcement of a government alliance between the Social Democrats and the ultra-right in Slovakia, the Social Democrats in the EU Parliament (S&D) plans to expel its three Slovak MPs from the group.
The deputies of the Smer-SD party, led by election winner Roberto Fico, will leave the faction next week.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) had previously announced that it would suspend its Slovak members.
The coalition agreement between Smer-SD and the left-wing party Hlas-SD and the ultra-right party SNS was “incompatible with the progressive values and principles of the European family of socialists and social democrats”, according to the S&D faction.
The latest statements by party leaders in Slovakia on Russia’s war in Ukraine, migration, the rule of law and the rights of the LGBTQ community caused “serious concerns” and “no place” in the party family.
