suspicion of espionage! – Austria expels four Russian diplomats

Date:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expels four Russian diplomats. A spokeswoman said on Thursday. “Two diplomats from the Russian embassy have taken actions inconsistent with their diplomatic status” and have been “declared persona non gratae,” it said. It must be about the suspicion of espionage.

Two diplomats from the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations were also asked to leave Austria. The diplomats involved must have left Austria by February 8.

The announcement of the expulsion comes just a day after Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen’s visit to Ukraine. He also met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and traveled to the suburb of Bucha, where wartime Russian soldiers had committed atrocities.

Diplomats already deported in April 2022
As early as April 2022, Russian diplomats were asked to leave Austria due to secret service activities. This measure led to fierce discussions at the time. Austria took several days to join the European sanctions against Russian diplomats. There was also a top Russian diplomat who had worked in Salzburg.
