Along with Poland and the US, the British government is one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters in the war against Russia. In addition to arms deliveries – which now also include battle tanks – Ukrainian soldiers have also been trained in the United Kingdom for some time. Now apparently London is also breaking with an earlier NATO taboo. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Wednesday during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the training will now also be extended to marines and fighter pilots.
Some 10,000 Ukrainians have received military training in Britain in the past six months, with another 20,000 to follow this year – including pilots. According to the prime minister, these should enable the Ukrainians to fly with “modern aircraft according to NATO standards”. The statement from the Prime Minister’s office did not reveal which fighter jets training should take place on, nor a timetable. On the one hand, the British Air Force has the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35 Lightning II multipurpose fighter aircraft.
Selenskyj’s journey had previously been kept top secret and was not made public until Wednesday morning. “President Zelenskyy’s visit is a testament to his country’s courage, determination and fighting spirit and a testament to the unwavering friendship between our two countries,” Sunak said. In a joint statement by the two, Sunak assured Britain “will support Ukraine until the end of this conflict” and help the country win against Russia.
