An 87-year-old German from the district of Pfaffenhofen (Upper Bavaria) noticed an odor emanating from the engine compartment of his mobile home on Sunday afternoon.
He drove to the large parking lot on the B164 towards Maria Alm in Salzburg to find out the source of the stench. When he parked the vehicle, smoke was already billowing from the engine compartment. He and his passenger then tried to put out the fire with hand fire extinguishers.
Despite the rapid deployment of a total of 26 firefighters from the Maria Alm volunteer fire brigade, the mobile home caught fire. The heat from the fire also damaged two other vehicles in the parking lot.
A fire investigator from the district police command determined an electrical fault in the engine compartment of the mobile home as the cause of the fire. Further investigations are currently underway.
