The website of the Directorate of State Security Intelligence (DSN) and dozens of other websites of the Ministry of the Interior have been offline for days after virtual servers went down. The ministry’s website was fully accessible again on Wednesday. The cause was the failure of a storage system, a hacker attack was ruled out from “current perspective”.
Central Ministry of Interior applications were never restricted because they ran on independent systems. No data has been lost, the ministry assured.
Numerous websites were unavailable on Wednesday afternoon – in addition to those of the State Security and Intelligence Service Directorate, those of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department, the Children’s Police and those of the Security Academy.
“Chain of Adverse Circumstances”
According to the ministry, the server problems started at 11 p.m. on Sunday. “Due to a succession of unfavorable conditions, a storage system failed. Several virtual servers are currently affected and need to be rebuilt,” the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday morning.
All security systems and e-mail traffic are not restricted. According to the ministry, the most essential services have already been restored or are running on down websites. Wednesday afternoon all pages were back online.

Interesting detail: Germany was only warned on Monday – krone.at reported – of a large-scale wave of cyberattacks against companies and public institutions with ransomware that encrypts data, which gained momentum over the weekend. According to information from the German Federal Office for IT Security, virtual servers managed with a virtualization solution from the provider VMWare are affected.
